Questions
What sellers ask about digital art mockups.
The practical answers behind resolution, ratios, rights and marketplace rules — before you publish a listing.
- What is a mockup in art?
- A mockup is a realistic product photo that shows your artwork as a finished item — a poster on a wall, a framed print above a sofa, a canvas in a nursery. It is not a new artwork: it is your existing file placed into a scene so a buyer can picture it in their own home.
- How do I put my art into a mockup without Photoshop?
- In DecoDrop you pick a product, a room and an interior style, then drop your file in. Your original artwork is composited into the frame with correct perspective and lighting — no layers, no smart objects, no Photoshop licence.
- Do mockups change or redraw my artwork?
- They should not. DecoDrop preserves original asset identity: the exact pixels you uploaded are placed in the scene. Nothing is re-imagined, recoloured or regenerated, so the mockup always matches the file your customer downloads.
- What size and resolution should a mockup image be?
- Marketplaces want roughly square, high-resolution listing images — 2000×2000 px is a safe target for Etsy and Shopify. That is separate from your print file, which should be 300 DPI at the finished print size.
- Does the mockup need to be 300 DPI?
- No. Mockups are screen images, so 72–144 DPI at a large pixel size is fine. The 300 DPI requirement applies to the print-ready files your buyer receives or your POD partner prints.
- Which aspect ratios should I show in mockups?
- Show the ratios you actually sell. For wall art that is usually 2:3, 3:4, 4:5, 5:7, 11:14, ISO A-series and 1:1. Mockup the ratio a buyer is most likely to order first, then add the others as secondary images.
- How many mockups should an Etsy listing have?
- Use the full slot count. A strong pattern is: one hero room scene, two or three alternative rooms or styles, one close-up showing texture or framing, and one informational image listing the included ratios and sizes.
- Can I use mockups for Printify, Printful and Gelato listings?
- Yes. The mockup is your listing image; the print file is what the POD partner prints. Generate the room scenes for your storefront and export the vendor-specific ratio pack — with the right bleed and safe area — for fulfilment.
- Are AI-generated art mockups allowed on Etsy?
- Yes, provided the listing is accurate. Etsy requires AI-assisted work to be described honestly and the shop owner to be the creator. Mockups showing your own AI-assisted artwork are standard practice — just do not imply a physical item when you are selling a digital download.
- Do I need commercial rights to use a mockup scene?
- Yes. Any room photo you use in a listing must be licensed for commercial use. DecoDrop's scenes are cleared for seller listings, so you can publish them without hunting down separate stock licences.
